TMTA

Transport and Mobility Test Area

The "Transport and Mobility Test Area" is a regional initiative designed as an experimental site for testing technologies in automated driving, outdoor robotics, and interactions with vulnerable road users. It includes a secured zone of at least 180m x 90m, with a speed limit of 40 km/h, and a control building. The area will be equipped with advanced research tools, such as motion capture systems, V2X communication, and integrated road sensors, to support various research studies.

Infrastructure and User Services

For effective testing and research, a controlled environment is essential to ensure safety, accuracy, and repeatability. The proposed area features restricted and controllable access, minimizing external interference that could affect the reliability of the experiments. To accommodate various test scenarios, the designated space will be at least 180 meters by 90 meters and allowing for a maximum speed of the test object of up to 40 km/h. The surface will be flat and composed of a high-friction material, such as asphalt, to ensure stability and consistency in test conditions. Additionally, an open area will help to guarantee good GPS signal quality, reducing the risk of signal loss or inaccuracies in tracking and positioning data. To support various research applications, the area will be easily reconfigurable, allowing for the setup of various case studies and enabling a wide range of experiments. The space will be equipped with advanced instrumentation, including an extended motion capture system, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, 5G network connectivity, and integrated road sensors. These technologies will enable real-time monitoring of test object dynamics, facilitate communication between them and infrastructure, and enhance data collection accuracy.

Examples/description of the type of research

The proposed facility will provide a highly controlled and adaptable testing environment for cutting-edge research and development in transport and mobility. The proposed facility enables safe, repeatable testing of automated driving technology in urban-like environments. Its reconfigurable space simulates intersections and pedestrian crossings. Equipped with V2X communication and 5G connectivity, it supports seamless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) interactions. A high-friction asphalt surface and motion capture system create an ideal environment for testing new bicycle technologies, such as self-balancing models, and their interaction with other road users. Real-time monitoring ensures precise data collection on balance, maneuverability, and cyclist interactions. The facility also supports research on human-automated vehicle interactions, including pedestrian detection, driver assistance systems, and shared control between humans and AI. Integrated sensors and motion capture technology assess reaction times, user behavior, and safety features across various scenarios. Moreover, the facility provides an opportunity for outdoor testing of mobile robots evaluating real-world performance under diverse conditions. Robots undergo navigation, obstacle avoidance, and coordination tests, ensuring safe, controlled experimentation before deployment in logistics, inspection, and mobility applications.

How to access the infrastructure?

The access mechanism for the proposed facility will have a restricted entry to maintain a controlled environment. Access will be managed through a combination of authorized personnel, with 90% of the access granted to researchers or test operators, and 10% to maintenance and support staff. Access will be monitored and controlled using secure entry systems, ensuring minimal interference with experiments. In this way, it will guarantee both safety and accurate test conditions while allowing flexibility for various research needs.
