ARISE

Authoritative and Rapid Identification System for Essential biodiversity information

ARISE is the Dutch infrastructure for identification of species using innovative technologies including image-recognition, sound recognition, DNA-barcoding and radar. We develop the reference libraries for all Dutch species so that unknown DNA sequences, images and sounds can be identified based on existing knowledge. ARISE thus forms the basis for monitoring of species on land in water, soil and air.

Infrastructure and User Services

ARISE is the Dutch infrastructure for identification of species using innovative technologies including image-recognition, sound recognition, DNA-barcoding and radar. We develop the reference libraries for all Dutch species so that unknown DNA sequences, images and sounds can be identified based on existing knowledge. ARISE thus forms the basis for monitoring of species on land in water, soil and air. Specifically, we are gathering DNA barcodes for all Dutch species, these are deposited on and joined with existing databases like BOLD and Unite. Any user can access these databases. For image and sound, we developed pipelines where users can submit their images and sound files, choose the AI algorithm to identify species and deposit files with validated species information. Moreover, our laboratories are available for analyses of DNA samples aimed at species identification. Our sensor portal can link an array of sensor types (e.g. cameras, microphones) to our AI-based analysis pipelines, whereas our biocloud can facilitate data storage and management. Finally, data from sensors in our demonstration sites are available for use by researchers through known repositories such as GBIF and Zenodo.

Examples/description of the type of research

Biodiversity monitoring is currently limited to a few groups of large species (e.g. birds, mammals), with most of biodiversity not being monitored. ARISE tools and pipelines make it possible to: (1) assess species diversity and turnover across the Dutch habitats; (2) assess species diets and occurrence patterns using our sensors and sampling; and (3) serve as an early warning for newly arriving species and detector of climate change impacts. Among other things.

How to access the infrastructure?

For DNA-based identification; Users can submit samples for the ARISE species reference database or DNA analyses by standardized sampling material, access to data registration and interfases to view results
For image and sound recognition services; sensors can be registered directly or data can be uploaded through registration after which the online analyses platform (interface) can be used.
