International collaboration

Both the Netherlands and Europe have compiled various agendas to tackle societal and scientific challenges. The importance of European Union policies for Dutch research and innovation policy has strongly increased in recent years.

Collaborating with European partners benefits the quality and impact of Dutch research. It allows Dutch researchers to absorb new knowledge from abroad, which in turn strengthens the Dutch knowledge base. The Netherlands participates in a number of international treaty organisations, other organisations and European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs) that frequently play an important role in the development and management of large-scale research infrastructure.

Participation in international research infrastructures

Dutch participation in international research infrastructures is essential for researchers from all scientific fields. Through membership, scientists from our country gain access to the facilities, data and services of large-scale scientific research infrastructures, which are fundamental for academic research in all scientific areas. This is concluded in the report 'Analysis of the Dutch participation in international research infrastructures' drawn up by NWO in collaboration with the field. The report contains an analysis of Dutch memberships in large-scale international scientific research infrastructures.
