Radboud Imaging Center

Radboud Imaging Center

The Radboud Imaging Center provides the most up-to-date equipment and expertise for imaging research. The research facilities are organized in seven units: CLIC (Clinical Imaging Center, for clinical studies involved medical imaging and clinical imaging facilities), DCCN (Donders Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging), PRIME (Preclinical Imaging Center, for animal imaging), MIC (Microscopic Imaging Center for advanced microscopy), DCU (Dosimetry Core Unit ) & DRC (Dosimetry Radiobiology Centre), RTM (Radboud Translational Medicine) a cyclotron facility for the GMP manufacturing of radiotracers, and the Radboud-3D lab (for advanced 3D imaging applications). The Radboud Imaging Center provides services for Dutch and international research institutes as well as industry.

Infrastructure and User Services

The Radboud Imaging Center provides frontline facilities and expertise for noninvasive imaging in patients, animal models and biological samples for biomedical research, as well as IT infrastructure and expertise on handling and processing medical image data:

  • CLIC provides noninvasive state-of-the-art patient imaging with MRI (1.5 - 7T), CT (up to 320-slice), PET/CT, US, SPECT/CT, and fluorescence imaging. CLIC has connections to the MR-Linac for radiotherapy under real-time MRI guidance.
  • DCCN provides morphologic and functional 3 – 7 T MR imaging of the brain, MR morphometry,  fMRI, connectivity analysis using resting state fMRI and diffusion weighed imaging.
  • PRIME is an official node in the Euro-Bioimaging network and a Dutch technology hotel. It provides advanced equipment for small animal and tissue imaging with 11.7 T MRI, 7 T MRI, HRMAS,  microPET/CT, microSPECT/CT, high frequency ultrasound (20,40 and 55 MHz), fluorescence imaging, bioluminescence imaging, multi-photon fluorescence and non-linear microscopy and photoacoustic imaging.
  • MIC provides facilities for light and electron microscopy of biological samples using Advanced Microscopy, such as CLSM, TIRF, FCS, FLIM, SEM, TEM, AFM, single-particle tracking, and high-content imaging.
  • DCU & DRC enable effective and safe radionuclide therapy for cancer patients by providing support on dosimetry and radiobiology issues, and infrastructure to conduct dosimetry and radiobiology experiments.
  • RTM provides a 11 MeV cyclotron for production of radionuclide and GMP facilities for production of tracers for PET imaging.
  • The Radboud-3D lab provides facilities for Cone Beam CT, 3D stereo-photogrammetry, Intra-oral scanning, 3D printing and software for Virtual and Augmented reality.

The Radboud Imaging Center has close connections to Healthy Data, a GWI with a high performance computing cluster with over 100 GPUs and a software platform to support image-based clinical and preclinical.

Examples/description of the type of research

The Radboud Imaging Center performs and supports biomedical imaging research in the widest range, from molecule to man, from the smallest to the largest spatial resolution. We develop methodology and validate applications in clinical imaging research in patients with many different diseases (oncology, diabetes, neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases and more), neuroscientific research in volunteers and animal models, preclinical translational research related to our clinical research, fundamental microscopic imaging to understand mechanisms of disease development, fundamental and applied nuclear imaging research, and develop and implement a wide range of software tools for evaluation and visualization.

How to access the infrastructure ?

Access to the units of the Radboud Imaging Center is provided for all (inter)national investigators by RTC websites or web portals (Euro-Bioimaging); if not found directly the contact person redirects.

In most cases, access to investigators from national and international academic institutions is granted via research collaborations: The Radboud investigators and the guest researchers define a research project, and the project is carried out in collaboration using the equipment of the Radboud Imaging Center.

Collaborations with private partners (e.g. pharmaceutical companies, SMEs) exist in ‘fee for service’ projects, or, in research projects defined in collaboration with the partner, which are carried out by the investigators from the Radboud Imaging Center.
