ODISSEI

ODISSEI

ODISSEI is a shared research infrastructure that brings together existing data from the social sciences and enriches them with data from government registries and online sources. The infrastructure ensures that Dutch social scientists are well equipped to exploit the opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence and the digital age. By developing innovative analytics and presentation tools, and offering world class, secure and ethical data management facilities, ODISSEI enhances the position of Dutch social scientists as global leaders and enables them to better address the pressing social questions of our time.

Infrastructure and User Services

ODISSEI provides two types of services. The first have unrestricted capacity and are made free at the point of use under conditions that are as open as possible and secure as necessary. These include various open datasets and resources that ODISSEI generates. These include the ODISSEI portal, data from the NKO, the ESS, LIS, SHARE, GGP, and LISS, as well as training resources and open source software.

The second type of service are those for which capacity is finite. Access to these resources is provided through cascade grants to researchers at ODISSEI member organizations. These include access to Statistics Netherlands Microdata, time in the LISS Panel for fielding instruments, Research Engineering support, Data Analytics Support, Advanced Training programs, access to the ODISSEI Secure Computer at SURF, or access to SANE environments and associated data.

Examples/description of the type of research

ODISSEI supports a wide array of research:

  1. Longitudinal and Large-Scale Data Analysis: Researchers can access extensive, longitudinal datasets, enabling the study of social phenomena over time. This facilitates research into trends, patterns, and causal relationships within society.
  2. Computational Social Science: Through the OSSC, social scientists can perform complex analyses on large, sensitive datasets. This high-performance computing environment allows for the exploration of intricate social interdependencies and the modeling of complex systems.
  3. Data Linkage Studies: ODISSEI facilitates the integration of diverse data sources, enabling researchers to link survey data with administrative records. This capability supports comprehensive analyses of social issues from multiple perspectives.
  4. Survey Research: Access to tools like the LISS panel allows researchers to conduct surveys on various topics, gathering data on public opinion, behaviors, and social trends. This supports studies in areas such as sociology, psychology, and public health.
  5. Methodological Innovations: The ODISSEI Social Data Science (SoDa) team collaborates with researchers to develop and apply advanced computational methods, such as machine learning and the use of next generation AI tools.
  6. Open Science and FAIR Data Practices: ODISSEI promotes open science by supporting researchers in making their data and software Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). This enhances the transparency and reproducibility of social science research.
  7. Policy Evaluation and Societal Impact Studies: By providing access to rich datasets and analytical tools, ODISSEI enables researchers to evaluate the effects of policies and interventions, contributing to evidence-based decision-making and societal well-being.

How to access the infrastructure

Access is either free at the point of use if capacity is infinite, for this access is 100%. If capacity is constrained then access is provided through grants that are ranked through peer-review and for this access is approximately 20% of demand.
