anDRea (Accessible Network Digital Research Environment Alliance) - myDRE

myDRE, a Digital Research Environment (DRE) solution by anDREa, empowers researchers and organizations through secure data storage, processing, and collaboration in well-managed contexts. It supports dual responsibility for data, originating from UMCs and now used by all Dutch UMCs and growing research institutes. Initially designed for complex organizations like UMCs, universities, and knowledge institutes, myDRE now serves smaller entities and project-based consortia. Configurations streamline data agreements, enabling new instances within days. Organizations can quickly provide secure workspaces for collaborative teams, ensuring compliance, scalability and trust.

Infrastructure and User Services

myDRE is a service running on top of Microsoft Azure making the full power of a public cloud available in collaboration settings; including with people from different organisations and countries. Clients can bring their own billing accounts and conditions for the Azure consumption; including but not limited to GEANT/OCRE. myDRE is data and tooling agnostic.

Examples/description of the type of research

myDRE is data- and tool agnostic so can be used for any type of research. The predefined role based access per study/workspace fits the needs for a large variety of studies and consortia and make it at the same time easier on the legal side of collaborations. myDRE is found by DPOs and CISOs as suitable to store and process secondary use of health data, privacy sensitive data, and intellectual sensitive data. myDRE is also used to set up nodes for Federated Learning, to experiment with AI/LLM, as an environment to collect, curate and issue data. Controlled options exist to interact with data, tool, and script repositories (e.g. Python, R, Git). Also features have been added to monitor, control and report costs and other reporting features that support the compliancy needs of users and the organisations. We are in the process of adding EHDS-compliant workspaces.

How to access the infrastructure?

The web app part is digital access. The work on the VMs is done through remote access (RDP and more and more RDP-over-HTML). No data is directly accessible in the web app, nor does RDP allow remote-local interaction.
