IBISBA-NL
Infrastructure for BIotechnology Services for BiomAnufacturing - NL
The IBISBA is a PAN-European, distributed infrastructure supporting research and innovation in biomanufacturing and biotechnology. It bridges the gap between basic research, innovation, and industry by providing an open-access, single access point to integrated services for end-to-end bioprocess development (www.ibisba.eu). IBISBA-NL, the national node, enables high-end research by providing infrastructure for high-throughput biocatalyst (re-)design and construction, and rapid and tailored biomanufacturing of a wide range of chemicals, nutrients and materials. IBISBA-NL fosters synergies between its diverse biotech assets and leverages collaboration to attract investment, reduce duplication of resources, and optimize the development of sustainable bio-based products and processes.

IBISBA(-NL) is a distributed research infrastructure dedicated to industrial biotechnology, providing a wide range of advanced experimental facilities, digital tools, and expert support to accelerate end-to-end bioprocess innovation. It integrates state-of-the-art laboratories specializing a variety of aspects in synthetic biology, systems biology, protein engineering, metabolic engineering, biomanufacturing and bioprocess development at various levels. The infrastructure includes cutting-edge equipment for high-throughput screening, omics technologies, automated strain engineering, (bio)sensing, fermentation, and scale-up processes, among other. Computational resources support AI-driven modeling, multi-scale simulations, data integration and digital twinning, ensuring effective and efficient development of bio-based solutions. Extensive datasets and repositories, following FAIR principles, enhance knowledge sharing and reproducibility.
IBISBA(-NL) offers a range of services to academic and industrial users, providing access to its facilities for experimentation, process optimization, and technology validation. Users benefit from expertise in strain and enzyme engineering, data-driven modeling, and biomanufacturing. The infrastructure fosters collaboration through joint research projects, training programs, and digital platforms that enable remote data analysis and simulation. By supporting innovation in bio-based products, biopharmaceuticals, and sustainable materials, IBISBA contributes to the development of a circular bioeconomy and the advancement of environmentally friendly industrial processes.
Examples/description of the type of research
IBISBA facilitates cutting-edge research in biomanufacturing and industrial biotechnology, supporting the development of sustainable, bio-based solutions across various sectors. It enables both basic and applied research in synthetic biology, systems biology, and metabolic engineering to advance understanding of cellular systems, in particular microbes, algae, animal cells, to enable harnessing this understanding for the design and optimize strains and enzymatic pathways for industrial applications, and to create new biological functions that expand our frontiers of knowledge. By integrating high-throughput screening, design, build, test and learn computational modeling and automation, IBISBA accelerates the development novel and better bioprocesses.
How to access the infrastructure?
The ESFRI IBISBA is a distributed infrastructure following a hub-and-spokes model. Access is provided through a one-stop shop, in which prospective users submit applications for (multiple) services to a hub following a standardize procedure. Proposals are evaluated according to a number of criteria (foremost, scientific excellence, open science, envisaged impacts) and granted according to the quality and availability of the service providers. Being part of the European ESFRI, IBISBA-NL is embedded and makes use of its operation scaffold. However, it also replicates it at national level to provide tailored services to the Dutch academic and industrial community.
