EATRIS-NL

EATRIS-NL

EATRIS is a distributed research infrastructure providing pre-clinical and clinical services, technology platforms and expertise focusing on optimising preclinical and early clinical development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics. In the operational phase, EATRIS is an established ERIC since 2013, with the landmark status in the ESFRI roadmap (2021). The Netherlands is the host country and coordinates the activities of EATRIS-ERIC. The Dutch researchers co-lead three from the five EATRIS platforms: Vaccines, Inflammation & Immunomonitoring (prof Jan Langermans); Biomarkers (prof Alain van Gool); Imaging & tracing (prof Bert Windhorst). EATRIS-NL is enhanced by the investment of the National Growth Fund (Health-RI), the establishment of FAST and by formalized collaborations across ESFRIs.

Infrastructure and User Services

Scientific support through EATRIS platforms: The platforms constitute a mix of well-established technologies (small molecules and vaccines), boosting technologies (biomarkers, imaging & tracers) and novel technologies with a great promise (ATMPs).

Data and data access: Health-RI operates as the national node for EATRIS-NL and takes responsibility for access to data and samples at a national scale. Participation in establishing EHDS/HDAB-NL, alongside the development of an integrated national health data architecture. Forging multi-year collaboration agreements with all Dutch medical centers, fostering deeper engagement with the scientific communities involved in EATRIS. The EATRIS-NL facilities in these platforms produce data in accordance with the quality program of EATRIS

National coordination: provided by in-kind contribution from Health-RI to streamline governance, and operational flows to bind scientific communities. Health-RI envisions the value of collaborations across ESFRIs, Health-RI, being the node coordinator of BBMRI-NL, ELIXIR-NL works to establish a comprehensive set of services to biomedical researchers and optimally exploit the synergies between these national nodes. As of 2025, EATRIS-NL will work jointly with six ESFRIs in the CANDLE project (HRI coordination) to develop national cancer data nodes across Europe.

FAST works in a close collaboration with EATRIS to unlock knowledge about research facilities, expertise and international EU funding opportunities to support researchers and companies in the field of therapy development. With EATRIS, FAST initiated a network infrastructure of communities including  rare diseases, drug repurposing, and infectious diseases to support therapy development, fostering innovative collaborative models linking to communities and platforms. ZonMw’s active involvement in REMEDi4ALL with various Dutch parties further underscores efforts towards unlocking the potential of drug repurposing.

Examples/description of the type of research

EATRIS supports scientific communities through technology pipelines and supporting services in so-called platforms, which constitute the key research areas of EATRIS internationally and nationally:

Imaging & tracing. This platform is relevant for translation research in various high-burden disease areas, such as oncology and immunology. Examples of research application domains involve visualization and quantification of disease targets and therapy response to help understanding disease mechanisms, dose finding studies, and supporting drug development projects through quantitative PK/PD modeling.

Biomarkers. The platform provides access to a range of technologies for biomarker validation/development: access to clinical samples, standardized assay development, high-end omics facilities and bioinformatics expertise.

Vaccines, inflammation, and immune monitoring. The platform offers proven state-of-the-art resources for all critical issues related to vaccine development, including specialized GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) facilities.

Small molecules. The platform has access to advanced screening facilities with innovative cell-based assays as well as integrated use of the latest biomarker techniques.

Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs). The EATRIS platform provides qualified technologies for the critical issues in this research and development area, such as specialized GMP facilities, imaging facilities for in vivo animal studies, availability of dedicated/ tailored animal models..

With EATRIS, FAST initiated a network infrastructure of communities including rare diseases, drug repurposing, infectious diseases, ATMPs and radiopharmaceuticals. ZonMw’s active involvement in REMEDi4ALL with various Dutch parties further underscores efforts towards unlocking the potential of drug repurposing.
