CIS

Center for Image Sciences

The Center of Image Sciences (CIS) innovates in medical imaging techniques so to explore new biomarkers that aid understanding of diseases and treatments. The center is focused on image guided treatments ranging from PET guided nuclear medicine, MR thermometry guided high intensity focused ultrasound, MRI guided radiotherapy, Augmented imaging in robotic surgery, metabolic image guiding in immune and chemo therapy

Infrastructure and User Services

The CIS includes:

  • 17 clinical MRI systems that facilitate patches to merge innovative technology in clinical research
  • PET-CT systems and radiochemical lab for nuclear tracers and treatments
  • MR-HIFU system for uterine, breast and brain
  • 7T metabolic MRI for high resolution imaging and metabolic imaging
  • Research only 1.5T wide bore MRI system for hardware developments
  • 3 MRLinacs for image guided radiotherapy
  • 7T and 9.4T preclinical MRI systems for specimen studies as well as small animals

Future infrastructure:

  • BioMotive: a 0.5T open vertical MRI and a 3T walk-in large-bore MRI system that will allow for full-body dynamic studies during natural, weight-bearing activities and physical exercise
  • Queen: hosting the part of Queen that facilitates a 14T insert for brain MRI

Examples/description of the type of research

The research that CIS facilitates ranges from fundamental science to applied sciences that require the sort of precision that can only be obtained with the advanced systems in the facility targeting new insights in in vivo biology and understanding of tissue behavior during treatments.

How to access the infrastructure?

External (i.e. via EuroBioImaging) and internal users propose a research plan and reach out to the department responsible for the specific imaging platform to assess scientific quality, feasibility, capacity, staff requirements and budget. After agreement, ethical approval (animal or human) and if needed MDR approval is requested. Upon approval, the user gets access to the booking system of the imaging system, and collaborates with the staff required to operate the system.
