AlgaePARC

Algae Production and Research Center

AlgaePARC is a multidisciplinary research initiative integrating the microalgae and cyanobacteria process chain. From laboratory to pilot scales, we develop technologies, transitioning from conceptualization to establishing competitive and innovative processes and products. Our focus spans commodities, emphasizing cost reduction and scale-up, and higher value products, addressing challenges in reliability, product quality, quantity, and market introduction. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, our research prioritizes efficient resource utilization, energy minimization, and nutrient recycling through reactor design and process optimization.

Infrastructure and User Services

AlgaePARC is a state-of-the-art research facility comprising fully equipped analytical laboratory and pilot spaces, including two greenhouse compartments and outdoor areas, AlgaePARC is dedicated to advancing research in microalgal biomass production and biorefinery.

UPSTREAM PROCESS:
The indoor infrastructure accommodates various reactor types (tubular, flat panel) and sizes to facilitate preliminary studies,(25L, 250L) generate biomass for pilot-scale reactors(1700L), and maintain year-round production. Smaller systems enable initial screenings, physiological studies, and simulation of outdoor conditions for efficient strain characterization and production process development. The facility houses two industrially relevant 1700L tubular photobioreactor for commercial-scale simulation.

Food Safe and GMO Facility:
The indoors pilot plant hosts genetically modified microalgae cultivation in the closed vertical 1700L tubular photobioreactor designed for industrial-like operation and control. This reactor operates year-round, supporting research and biomass production for biorefinery and product development.

DOWNSTREAM PROCESS:
At AlgaePARC, our advanced downstream process equipment is tailored for crucial purification and isolation steps in bio-based product development. This includes cutting-edge devices for filtration, chromatography, centrifugation, and other advanced separation techniques, along with specialized systems for efficient drying and precise formulation of the final product. Emphasizing the paramount importance of the downstream process, AlgaePARC is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of quality, purity, and yield. This commitment ensures the successful creation of bio-based products that meet the stringent requirements of modern biotechnological applications.

Examples/description of the type of research

In addition to research and education, AlgaePARC focuses on 3 core activities specifically for SMEs:

  • AlgaePARC as an incubator. Start-ups lack equipment and space to develop production technology. In recent years, AlgaePARC has rented space and equipment to a number of companies to develop their production technology into prototypes. AlgaePARC also wants to provide space to start-ups in the future to stimulate the development of commercial companies in the region.
  • AlgaePARC as demonstrator. AlgaePARC is an open innovation facility. Many companies have access to develop technology and to demonstrate their technology. A number of these technologies have been demonstrated in recent years. Equipment has been made available for this purpose as an in-kind contribution or at reduced costs.
  • AlgaePARC as facilitator. AlgaePARC facilitates companies in unburdening themselves in technology development. Due to the presence of equipment that companies can use, it is not necessary for the industry itself to make investments at the time of development.

How to access the infrastructure?

AlgaePARC provides access to pilot scale equipment which are used for at least 1 day per experiment for biorefinery research and multiple days in the case of algae cultivation processes
