There are many different kinds of large-scale research facilities. They vary from highly specialised (valuable) equipment, such as particle accelerators, large telescopes and high field magnets. It can also involve so-called ‘virtual’ facilities, such as extensive databases and scientific computer networks. Research collections, such as soil samples or a university book collection also qualify as large-scale research facilities.
